Are You Open During Bad Weather?

It is sometimes necessary to close the Artz Center because of bad weather. If this occurs, you will be contacted as soon as possible.

We will place a message on the Center’s voicemail by 6:30 in the morning informing families of our closure or late opening. You may reach this message by dialing 503-228-6479.

If You are Unable to Attend a Session

Appointments for individual therapy are scheduled, usually once or twice a week, for families whose children are enrolled for services. These times are set aside specifically for your appointment. Your clinician(s) will spend time thoughtfully preparing and gathering appropriate materials for the session. We expect that you will take this appointment time as seriously as we do.

  • Attendance is expected unless there is an illness or emergency. Please call as early as possible if you and your child cannot attend a session. We have 24-hour voice mail, so you may leave a message at any time.
  • Failure to appear for your appointment is considered a “no-show.” Since our clinician has scheduled time for you, you will charged for the session if you no-show. If two no-shows occur within a 6-week period, treatment may be terminated.
  • If you are late for your appointment, you will be seen for the remainder of the appointment time and will be charged for the full appointment. For example, if your appointment is schedule for 9:00-10:00 and you arrive at 9:20, you will be seen until 10:00 and will be charged for the full hour.
  • When a clinician is unavailable due to illness or emergency, we will contact you as soon as possible. You will be informed in advance when the clinician will be absent for conferences, meetings or vacation and your child’s treatment times will be rescheduled, if possible.

What If My Child is Ill?

  • If your child has a cold with a cough and/or runny nose, a fever, diarrhea or a rash, please keep him or her at home until recovery. A child must be free of fever for a minimum of 24 hours before returning. If in doubt, please call your clinician to discuss the matter. The staff reserves the right not see someone with a contagious illness. Ask your clinician for a copy of the brochure entitled “Should I send my child to school?” for guidelines on when to keep your child at home.
  • If your child gets any communicable disease (e.g., chicken pox), please inform the staff immediately so that the other parents can be notified in writing. A physician’s note stating your child is medically cleared will be required upon return to services at the Child Communication Clinic.
  • If a child arrives exhibiting obvious signs of ill health including rash, cough, running nose, fever or signs of contagion, the clinician may elect not provide services. Please do not bring your child to the Center with obvious infections including head lice, pinkeye, scabies, etc.
  • If a child becomes ill while at the Center and a caregiver is not present, the caregiver or designated emergency person will be contacted to pick up the child.

What Should My Child Wear to Sessions?

  • Please bring your child to individual or group sessions in clothes appropriate for the day’s weather. Outside activities are incorporated into group sessions as much as possible. Also keep in mind when choosing your child’s outfit that we use paints and playdough and have cooking and snack activities during some sessions.
  • Your child must be wearing a clean, dry diaper upon arrival. If a diaper change is needed during group or individual sessions, we will ask parents to change the diaper if they are present.
