Elon Ellis was known as “Mr. Golf” in Portland and shared a passion for the thousands of children and families served at the Artz Center for Developmental Health & Audiology. Ellis’ commitment to children diagnosed with conditions like ADHD, Rett syndrome, speech/language challenges and autism spectrum disorder lives on through the Elon Ellis Memorial Golf Tournament.

The proceeds from this event support the Artz Center’s annual scholarship budget which provides low-income and under-insured children access to our services.

Parenting Your Child with ASD Through Positive Discipline

A Parenting Path with Heart^SM

For parents of children with autism spectrum disorder who are looking for long-term parenting skills to help their children:

strengthen their sense of belonging and significance in the family
learn about feelings and ways to express them in positive ways
think about social solutions for their everyday challenges
show greater concern and respect for others
become more responsible at home and in the community

Positive Discipline is respectful and non-punitive and will:

provide parents with practical tools adapted for children with ASD
incorporate kindness and firmness into parenting
help parents understand the meaning of their children’s behavior
empower parents with effective solutions for daily problems
bring more joy into family life both at home and in the community

Instructors: Steven Foster, LCSW, and Arlene Raphael, MS, Autism Specialist – Arlene and Steven are Certified Positive Discipline Associates and have a combined experience of over 50 years serving children with autism and other special needs.

Dates: Seven Thursdays from 4/15/10 through 5/27/10

Time: 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Location: Artz Center for Developmental Health, 1675 SW Marlow Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97225, Suite 200, Conference Room

Cost: The cost for this 7-session class is $150.00 per person. If 2 people attend who are from the same family, the cost for both is $200.00. There is an extra charge of $25.00 for the Positive Discipline book and printed materials. Payments are due at the first class.

The Artz Center for Developmental Health & Audiology’s 6th Annual Christmas Ships dinner was a great success thanks to the over 120 community supporters who attended or sponsored the event. The Artz Center for Developmental Health & Audiology was able to raise nearly $60,000 to sustain our comprehensive developmental and audiology services for children and adults.

The Artz Center for Developmental Health & Audiology needs volunteers to be videotaped playing with their child as part of a project to advance the Behavioral Health Screen™ (BHS™). With your help, the BHS™ may one day help many parents of young children by offering a quick and inexpensive method for doctors and family professionals to monitor the healthiness of family relationships.

Do you have 15 minutes?

Would you like to give your time to help improve the care of other families?

Is your child passing through any of the following ages?

5 to 7 months
10 to 14 months
16 to 20 months
22 to 26 months

Dr. David Willis will view and edit your playtime film and if you are interested, will follow-up with a personal behavioral-developmental pediatrician’s opinion.
